Martin však Hanke neuvážene sľúbil, že na jej šieste narodeniny mama príde a teraz netuší, ako svoj sľub naplní. Nečakanú záchranu nájde v nespútanej a trochu bláznivej Nadi Vernerovej. Kurosaki Ichigo je obyčajný stredoškolák. Teda ak vynecháme jeho schopnosť vidieť rôzne nadprirodzené bytosti. Jeho osud sa čoskoro prepletie s životom dievčatá - šinigami (anjel smrti v japonskom podaní) v mene Kuchiki Rukia. Tá je počas súboja s bytosťou Hollow (jedna z bežných povinností šinigami) nútená previesť svoje schopnosti na Ichiga. Lenže už si ich nedokáže vziať späť. Kurosaki tak musí skĺbiť štúdia so službou šinigami. Rukiin čin je však medzi šinigami považovaný za zločin a tak jej unesú do ich sveta Seireitei, kde Rukia čaká na rozsudok, ktorým môže byť aj smrť. Ichigo je pevne rozhodnutý jej napriek všetkým šinigami zachrániť.
