American and British tourists get caught up in political unrest in Haiti.

When transplanted Texan Bob Seton arrives in Lawrence, Kansas he finds much to like about the place, especially Mary McCloud, daughter of the local banker. Politics is in the air however. It's just prior to the civil war and there is already a sharp division in the Territory as to whether it will remain slave-free. When he gets the opportunity to run for marshal, Seton finds himself running against the respected local schoolteacher, William Cantrell. Not is what it seems however. While acting as the upstanding citizen in public, Cantrell is dangerously ambitious and is prepared to do anything to make his mark, and his fortune, on the Territory. When he loses the race for marshal, he forms a group of raiders who run guns into the territory and rob and terrorize settlers throughout the territory. Eventually donning Confederate uniforms, it is left to Seton and the good citizens of Lawrence to face Cantrell and his raiders in one final clash.

Paul je v novom prostredí skoro ako ryba vo vode, surfuje nádhernými lesmi a spriatelí sa s miestnym pytliakmi Totochem (v slovenskej verzii trochu rušivo novým názvom na Tondu), ktorý ho učí poznávať prírodu. Získa si aj sympatie majiteľa panstva, mlčanlivého grófa de Fresnay, a na pozadí príbehu, pomaly sa odvíjajúceho sa príbehu v rytme prírody a ročných období, sa postupne odhaľuje tajomstvo Paulova pôvodu (a dôvod, prečo ho Celestine váhala do svojej starostlivosti prijať):

Možno už tuší, že sa skamarátil s mladou upírkou, ktorá žije v utajení so svojím strážcom a opatrovníkom.

V polovici sedemnásteho storočia mali ľudia bližšie k prírode, bližšie k Bohu a bližšie k iracionálnym javom, ktoré dnes považujeme už len za rozprávky. Tomassin obviňujú zo všetkých nešťastí a dokonca aj z čarodejníctva, napriek tomu, že práve ona je jediná, ktorá si aspoň čiastočne zachová zdravý rozum. A to, čo sa skrýva v temnom lese a doteraz hralo len úlohu pozorovateľa, sa rozhodne udrieť.
