Nancy, Kris, Quentin, Jesse a Dean žijú v Elm Street, v srdci obytného predmestia podobného tisícom ďalších - pokojné, upratané a bez starostí ... Ale týchto päť mladých ľudí už nejaký čas straší každú noc rovnakou trýznivou nočnou morou. Z tmy sa vynára muž s chrapľavým hlasom. Oblečený v roztrhanom červeno-zelenom tričku skrýva svoju neznesiteľne spálenú a znetvorenú tvár pod starým klobúkom. Na jeho pravej ruke má štyri dlhé oceľové pazúry ostrejšie ako žiletky. Volá sa Freddy Krueger a prišiel sa pomstiť.

Od doby, čo obyvatelia Elm Street dopujú svoje deti potlačovačom snov, je Freddy Krueger zúfalý. Túži po zabíjaní, ale nemá možnosť sa v ňom uplatniť. Preto vymyslí zákerný plán. Skrz vízie starej ženy priláka do svojho teritória jej syna, masakristu Jasona Voorheesa, ktorý dokáže vraždiť aj mimo snovú realitu. Jeho plán však zaškrípe, keď Jason odhalí Freddyho manipulatívne úmysly a pekelne sa naňho naštve. Na scéne sa pochopiteľne objaví i niekoľko teenagerov, ktorí budú usilovať o zničenie oboch masových vrahov.

Snový strašiak Freddy Krueger sa opäť vracia a hľadá nočné mory posledného žijúceho tínedžera zo Springwoodu a ženy, ktorá nadviaže spojenie s Kruegerom a to môže znamenať jeho záhubu.

Kristen, Kincaid a Joey sa stretli s Freddym Kruegerom už v 3. časti. Tentoraz sú späť v normálnom živote, ale Kristen znova začína mať nočné mory. V jednej z nich sa prechádza vo Freddyho dome, dôjde až do kotolne a tam vtiahne do svojho sna Kincaida aj Joeyho. Po útoku psa sa Kristen prebúdza so škaredou ranou na ruke. To je však len začiatok a Freddy sa už teší na ďalšie mladé mäsko, samozrejme s Kristen na čele.

Do domu na Elm Street sa nasťahovala nová rodina. Onedlho nato začnú mať tamojšie deti desivé sny o vrahovi deti menom Freddy Krueger. Tentokrát sa Freddy pokúsi posadnúť jedného tínedžera a dostať sa do reálneho sveta, kde má v pláne rozpútať peklo na zemi. Ale len v prípade, že chlapcova priateľka nedokáže premôcť strach v sebe a postaviť sa mu zoči-voči...
