André Castagnier ale zanedlho dostáva prestížnu cenu za víťazstvo v závode so svojou loďou Plaváčik a ponuky z celého sveta sa len hrnú. A s nimi samozrejme aj peniaze. Pán Fourchaume zrazu chce, aby sa k nemu André vrátil a je ochotný kvôli tomu podniknúť nejeden bláznivý kúsok.

V hlavnej úlohe sa zaskvel Louis de Funés, ktorý vynikajúco stvárnil bohatého, ale pritom až chorobne lakomého obchodníka Harpagona. Ten žije striedmym životom napriek tomu, že sa mu podarilo nahonobiť značné bohatstvo. Aby ho nikto neokradol, uloží peniaze do truhly a zakope ju vo vlastnej záhrade - a naďalej šetrí nielen na služobníctve, ale aj na svojich deťoch - synovi a dcére, ktorí si musia požičiavať, aby prežili. Lenže po čase má Harpagon pocit, že by mohol byť ešte bohatší. Preto vymyslí perfektný plán: dcéru chce vydať za majetného nápadníka, ktorý nežiada žiadne veno a v rovnaký deň sa chce sám oženiť s krásnou Marianou. Ibaže jeho plán má niekoľko háčikov: dcéra je až po uši zamilovaná do celkom iného mladíka a do Mariany je zaľúbený Harpagonov syn, ktorý s ňou má rovnaké plány ako otec.

Keď sa podnikateľ Bertrand dozvie, že jeho dcéra je tehotná, a ešte k tomu s jeho šoférom Oscarom, zúri. Mal totiž celkom iné plány a chcel ju dobre vydať za dôležitú osobu. Situáciu však skomplikuje tretí potenciálny zať, ktorý sa objaví na scéne...
